After reading about the tutor's realizing their own racism, I have began to realize that I am racist. Of course I am not comfortable with this fact, but I am glad that I have came to realize it. My Godfather is African-American and I did not believe that I had ever had any racist thoughts about him before. Then I realized that there have been many instances when I have had racists thoughts about him. When we go out to eat together I often wonder about what others are thinking about me. I feel like that are asking themselves why I am associating with an African-American man. Then I wonder why I even care, he is my Godfather. Is this a start to realizing one's own racism?
After writing about this event, I realized that I am victimizing myself. Why do I do this?

Okay I think I understand now. I have had many thoughts to myself about people of different races, some negative and some positive. I have also had negative thoughts about people of the white race as well, because of the advantages that get taken advantage of due to Whiteness.

Given the excellent discussion that has been developing around the role of schools in building communities, I would be interested to hear others' thoughts regarding Banks' statement in chapter 11 "Teaching for Social Justice, Diversity, and Citizenship in a Global World." Banks writes:
"Multicultural literacy consists of the skills and abilities to identify the creators of knowledge and their interests (Banks 1996), to uncover the assumptions of knowledge, to view knowledge from diverse ethnic and cultural perspectives, and to use knowledge to guide action that will create a humane and just world. When we teach students how to critique the injustice in the world, we should help them to formulate possibilities for action to change the world to make it more democratic and just. Critique without hope may leave students disillusioned and withouth agency (Freire, 1997)." (Banks, pp 154)
I would be interested to hear others' perspectives on how to empower students (future citizens) to be more democratic and justice oriented. I sometimes get the sense that many are not as comfortable with this level of empowerment as we would hope and expect.

I also agree that it is difficult for people to talk openly and honestly about controversial issues. Recently I had a class of high school seniors in which we were trying to discuss race and economic issues. I explained to the class that the point of the exercise was not to judge one another but to just gain an understanding not only of others but of themselves as well. I also told them that everyone had biases and prejudices whether they realized it or not and that it was natural but to become better people we need to honestly examine who we are and how we see others that are different to us. One student in the class(who was white and considered himself upper class) told me that he didn't think our conversation was appropriate for school because it might offend people. I told him that the point of school is to learn and we can only learn from each other and if we are honesty and that openness are going to be required if we are going to fully understand what we think and feel about others and the world around us. He told me that he had no desire to challenge or change anything he thought or believed. A scary, and I fear all too common, sentiment.

As I was re-reading chapter 8 of Educating Citizens in a Multicultural Society, I was struct by the following: "Social-psychological research indicates that individuals tend to categorize people into and to discriminate against out-groups, a behavior that poses a serious challenge to creating civic, moral, and just communities in which the acceptance of out-groups becomes normative. This research and theory, known as the 'minimal group paradigm', indicates that whenever in-groups and out-groups form, stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination develop." My challenge to the group is to pose strategies that schools can and do use to limit in-group/out-group formation and to create superordinate group identities. I would like to hear about what we actually can and do try.

Will we just go to the conferences of our choice on Saturday? I thought that we would have to sign-up in advance?
